How to Pay Off Your Mortgage Using Your Rrsp

A few years ago when we had a mortgage on the house I started researching ways that I could pay off the deabt as quickly as possible. While searching on Google I stumbled across something called an RRSP Mortgage. In order to do this you needed to have an amout equal to what you owed on your Mortgage. I also discovered that there are only a few banks or Financial Institutions in Canada that could actually set this up for me. TD Waterhouse was the one I used.

After meeting with the Mortgage Specialist at TD I realized that there were some other costs involved. First I needed to hire a lawyer to discharge the existing Mortgage. Luckily this only cost aroun $ 600. Secondly I had to pay some CMHC Insuarance on the new RRSP Mortgage (minimal) + an annual plan fee of $ 200.

As an axample, if you owe $ 100,000 on your mortgage and also have $ 100,000 in your RRSP, You pay off the $ 100,000 Mortgage completely and set up thr RRSP Mortgage so that you are paying it back at an interest rate of 8 % over the next 25 years.
